The Australian Government (Federal Government) is bigger, has a broader scope and is more stable than local council or state government employment. If you play your cards right you can build a career at the top, all road eventually lead to a federal department and in some cases/departments you can even move between states in the same role!

Australian federal government recruitment is more centralised than state systems, but like the states there are some departments that will advertise outside of the APS site particularly graduate or bulk intakes. Alternatively several large departments and specialist agencies recruit separately or run their own campaigns completely.

Below is the starting point for all federal government job seekers, the main site that all departments “should” advertise on.

APS Jobs

Website: https://www.apsjobs.gov.au

Scope:
The official recruitment website for the Australian Public Service (APS).

Roles advertised include:

  • APS 3–6 operational and corporate roles
  • Executive Level (EL1 / EL2) roles
  • Senior Executive Roles (SES)
  • Policy, ICT, HR, finance, project management and admin

Limitations:

  • Graduate programs can be recruited separately
  • High volume service delivery roles may appear elsewhere, particularly for example when they are doing bulk recruitment.
  • Both defense and security agencies sometimes use dedicated portals

Recruitment Portals outside of APS jobs

There are a quite a few rather large departments outside of canberra that have their own portals as well, we have covered them in other blogs.

  1. Canberra based jobs
  2. Large Federal Departments that are located AU wide.
  3. Defence, security, and enforcement agencies
  4. Smaller regulators and statutory agencies
